LP [SR-141]

This is the nineteenth studio album by Damo Furlong.

This album is about
He's wooden and two-dimensional but no more so than the rest, says Brendan O'Connor 'AND these people have the vote?" is a question you find yourself asking more and more these days. At last week's IFTA awards the question arose again as someone called Hiudai won the award for TV personality of the year, allegedly voted for by the general public. Charlie McCreevy may not have quite delivered on childcare this week, but Hiudai obviously does. The people have spoken.

All together now: Hiudai? Hiudai F**k is Hiudai? This must have been what Paddy Kielty, Gerry Kelly, Amanda Byram and Anne Doyle were asking themselves as it emerged that Hiudai was to walk off with the gong.

Hiudai is, in fact, an intensely annoyingcomputer-generated cartoon figure who appears on TG4's kids' output. TG4, for those of you with short attention spans, is an Irish-language TV station that apparently seemed like a good idea at the time. Hiudai's victory has sent shockwaves through the ranks of real TV presenters who are asking themselves if they should try and be more animated. Apparently some are even considering cutting back on the botox in the interest of more facial movement.

Not that Hiudai isn't as stiff as the rest of them. Not only is he computer-generated, he's pretty low-tech at that. And what's more, he's a foreigner. Don't be fooled by the name, Hiudai is actually Hugo, a syndicated character who appears on kids' TV all over Europe.

TG4's great talent was, it seems, to get Hugo to change his name into Irish and to speak in the first language. Which is, when you think about it, pretty much what TG4 has done with all its 'personalities'. That Hiudai has emerged as the station's biggest star in the process perhaps says something about the rest of them.

The Hiudai thing made a full-blown farce of a ceremony that was already teetering on the brink. It certainly rubbished the notion of involving audiences in voting for stuff on TV. What did it say about public interest when a character from minority channel TG4 won the phone poll ahead of national treasures like Anne Doyle and the strangely popular Gerry Kelly? The losers put a brave face on it as Hiudai graciously accepted the award, pointing out that he was a two-dimensional character whereas his competition was only one-dimensional. Anne Doyle was expressionless, but was surely dying inside. Paddy Kielty put a brave face on it despite being beaten by animated characters twice in one night puppets Podge and Rodge beat him for best entertainment show. But then, Kielty, who presented the National Lottery with Anthea Turner for a while, should be used to playing second fiddle to artificial, wooden TV presenters.

In Hiudai's defence, it has been pointed out that kids love him even though he speaks in Irish. "Kids don't necessarily always know what he's talking about but they find him mesmerising and comforting to watch as they sit around sucking on a bottle and wetting themselves," said one expert.

That's precisely how grown men feel about the divine Ms Doyle on the nine o'clock news.
