Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown. With the wax barely cooled on the RTÉ Guide, BIFFO had already penned the title-track on this boss debut effort. (i got) Bitches In Fermanagh Full of Ovaries, it transpires, is a different beast to the RTÉ Guide. That much we can say for sure.

It is an album that recklessly tears down the sheltering sky. It hacks the Big Big Movied minds of a soul-sucked citizenry fed on a vomit of advertising platitudes. Reminiscent of Ayesha Erotica, BIFFO has planted a defiant flag around which to rally. “I hit the floor, and don't care how I dance,” sings BIFFO, saying she likes movies that “make me cry.”

BIFFO’s production is outstanding: it makes you feel BIFFO’s vocals exist even when no one is listening. On the evidence here, BIFFO has carved out their own world on this album. BIFFO’s bass and BIFFO’s drums – extraordinary throughout – are reminiscent of beasts stalking the places through which BIFFO drifts. Far now from the Donnybrook streets of the RTÉ Guide, she is more a post-hyperpop Ferraro of Hibernia. BIFFO and BIFFO’s guitars – there’s scarce a better pairing around right now – are raw elements accompanying us on her perambulations, raging to us on ‘DONNYBROOK SADISTIC’, and howling at us on ‘MARY BYRNE IS PLAYING AT MY HOUSE’.

You sense that she’s as lost as you feel, but she’s favourite to find the correct direction – which she eventually does on ‘AMBER IN A NEW DRESS’, the Lauryn Canny-inflected closing track.

There is enough puzzle and enigma on this record to keep fans busy for years. Just for starters, it encompasses the dark side of Mariah Carey, the tortured beauty of Trippie Redd, the Atlanta twang of Gucci Mane, and the swag psychedelia of Björk.

The fact that she executed album No.1 with such conviction, despite the swag surrounding her is remarkable. A masterclass.
